Federal prosecutors have urged a judge to revoke Sam Bankman-Fried's bail in order to prevent him from tampering with witnesses ahead of his criminal fraud trial.
They believe that no pretrial release conditions will be sufficient to address their concerns, given the defendant's alleged attempts to interfere with the trial and his history of circumventing bail conditions.
The prosecutors cite instances where Bankman-Fried contacted potential witnesses, used a virtual private network to evade monitoring, and discussed matters with a reporter related to the case.
The defense argues that he has the right to defend himself and speak with reporters, but the prosecutors assert that witness tampering is not constitutionally protected speech.
The charges against Bankman-Fried relate to a significant financial fraud case, involving alleged misuse of deposits from his cryptocurrency exchange FTX to support risky investments, political contributions, and a lavish lifestyle for himself and his employees in the Bahamas.
The defendant's attorneys have until next week to respond to the prosecutors' arguments.
